Teaching my son about the use of the internet for studying and homework

Our oldest boy attends public school. He is getting to the age where he wants to look things up on the internet to help him with some of his school work. I also look up different sites myself to keep myself educated and up to date so I am able to help him when he comes to me with a question. I wish I was as knowledgeable about online help with school work when I was in school as I am now that I am helping my child do school work.

When he is older and starts doing more essays and term papers I will make sure that he knows that it’s ok to use the internet to help him brain storm ideas and gather his thoughts but that it is not ok to just copy and paste something off the internet and turn it in as his own work. If I had access to sites like www.studymode.com when I was in school I think a couple of my papers would have been better grades than they were. I could have used the AP Notes and Book Notes myself too. With sites like Study Mode I know that what ever the site is being used for that plagiarism won’t be an issue. Plagiarism is something I never learned much about or paid attention to as a kid but the older I got the more it was apparent that people liked taking credit for the work of others. I want my boys to be able to use the internet for school work. I want them to be able to study, learn, do research and get the grades they deserve for the work they do and study mode can help them do that.

It’s been a while since I had to do any type of school work I want to be sure that my boys know the do’s and don’ts of online “help” with school work. Do you allow your children to use the internet for school work? Do they have rules for using the internet for school work?
